The two pipes going into the heater should be marked with either Hot and Cold or a H and C. There should be a shut off valve on the cold side, but sometimes there is one on both sides. If the piping is visible, you can follow one or the other to where it comes into the house. The water heater is usually the first thing the water line runs to.

What is causing air in the hot water line but not the cold and it started after the hot water heater and vacuum breaker were replaced 3 months ago and has not stopped?
I think the only reasonable answer can be that the cold and hot water inlet/outlets are reversed. your hot water line is attached, at the heater to the cold water inlet or your hot water outlet is too short inside of the tank
Hot water heater the we just rerouted from bathroom to attic isn't filling... no leaks and cold water works and the tank will only fill when cold water is going ... anyone know anything about that?
Check piping. Make sure cold line going into cold side of water heater and hot side coming out hot side. Cold feed for water heater should come off main cold line. Make sure valves are open to and from water heater.

There are a few possibilities why. Troubleshoot asking yourself these questions: Is the hot water heater switched on electronically? Is the stop cock switched on? Are there air locks in the line? Is the hot water heater connected?

YES and No Yes if you are going to be working on the gas water heater and No if you are working on a cold water line and if you are working on a hot water line you can shut off the gas or electric to the water heater so in case your water heater drains but what I usually do is just turn the water heater's water supply valve off.
