How do you turn a triumph tr6 engine by hand?

To turn the engine slowly by hand (for valve adjustment, etc..) place the transmission in neutral and remove the spark-plugs (so you don't fight the compression of the cylinders). A 1 1/8" socket or wrench can be used on the crank-bolt or you can just pull the accessory belt. Avoid pulling on the plastic fan blades, they break.

Which is better an MG or a Triumph for reliability and cost of upkeep?

Neither. Both are problematic vehicles. They have horrible electrical system that are a nightmare. They are very nice driving little roadsters, but be aware they are not dependable, and repair costs are high. As an owner of many of these vehicles for over 40 years, I have to disagree with the above answer. Parts are plentiful and reasonably inexpensive for both, however the Triumph (and most nobably the TR6) is an extremely reliable car. It is also quite easy to work on having a straight 6 motor and independent rear end. The mechanical fuel pump is considerably more reliable than the MG's SU electric pump and the twin Stromberg carburetors are less finicky than the MG's SU carbs. All in all, a TR6 will also retain its value if bought at a fair price and maintained reasonably well. Get a Bentley Workshop Manual and do your own repairs for most things.
