Possibly caused by a bad Crank Position Sensor. Could also be the cam position sensor or the coil. They all work together.
Check your crank sensor. It is located on the drivers side of the transmission where the flywheel is.

If by magnetic pick up you are refering to the ignition system, the cam sensor is in the distributor, and the crank sensor is in the bell housing.
