On the V8 it is on the passenger side top of the transmission bell housing, on the six cylinder it is on the driver side top of the transmission bell housing.
The crankshaft position sensor is on the top driver side of the transmission bell housing.
The crankshaft position sensor is bolted to the bell housing of a 96 Grand Cherokee. It is at the top of the bell housing, just on the drivers side on a 4.0 L and on the passenger side on a V8.

The crank sensor should be on the drivers side of the transmission bell housing. It's more towards the top of the bell housing. The easiest way to get to it is reaching down from the top of the engine just below the valve cover. Atleast that is where it is on my 91 4.0L

It is on the right rear of the engine block(pass side) just above the oil pan.
