Someone believes you should, "Take Your coolant tank off and the sensor is located under it. It's fairlly simple to replace once you find it."; You will find a sensor there but not the crankshaft sensor. On a 99 Intrigue with a 3.5L, the crankshaft position sensor is in the engine block just above and behind the starter. get under the car, remove the starter and you should find what you are looking for.

The crankshaft sensor for the 5.2L Chrysler models is on the transmission bell-housing. It is above the starter, I had to remove the starter in order to get to the sensor. After that it was a piece of cake.

if your fuel pressure is still good i would replace the crankshaft position sensor , it is located behind the crankshaft pulley, you will have to pull it with a puller.

The carbon canister in the 99 Elantra is in a plastic case mounted to the frame just behind the driver's side rear tire. There are fuel vent line entering it and there is also an electric line that connects to an emission sensor.
On the top of the bell housing of the trans.. Look @ the engine its behind the left side head.. Look behind it..
I have a '95 buick regal with a similar problem. I took it to the local dealer, who changed the crankshaft positioning sensor and one of the ignition modules and the problem was fixed. I researched it on the internet and found several other cases with the same sensor problem. You can in theory change it yourself, but it's not easy - I think I paid $200-250 for parts and labor.
