Conrad up north:
I've got a '99 Protege and had to change the flasher unit last week. It is located up under the dash on the drivers side. It is about mid way between the clutch pedal (or where it would be if yours is an automatic), and the interior fuse panel. The OEM flasher unit has a white plastic case, aftermarket cases are usually black. It has a plug-on base with 3 wires. Once you've found it, just grab the base and wiggle it while pulling it toward you until it comes off. The flasher unit's case has a slot in the end which hooks over its chassis mounting bracket and lifts off vertically. (This unit also operates the hazard flashers.)
You can buy an OEM replacement for about $40, or a generic 3 pin universal aftermarket equal (minus the mounting slot) for about $15.
NOTE: The Mazda dealer's database document in my case was WRONG. Although the Part No. was right, it showed the flasher unit located in the engine compartment fuse panel assembly --- NOT TRUE !

A squeaky stick shift on a Mazda Protege likely needs greasing. It is recommended that you use a silicon grease for this.

The flasher unit for a 2000 Mazda Protégé is located under the dash. It is located just to the left of the steering wheel and very easily accessible.
