Check under the hood on the fire wall, if it isn't there, I can almost assure you that it is located inside or above the gas tank.AnswerThe fuel filter is located right in front of the fues box which is on the drivers side, it is the size of a soda can. Infront of the fuse box and look down to see it. AnswerMostly depends on the model of car but a common place for the fuel filter is right beside the fuel pump. These two are located between the rear tire and differential above the drive axle. The filter is a aluminum can with hoses on both ends. The fuel pump also has hoses and looks similar but has wires to power the pump.

If it is like the Pt Cruiser (same chassis) it is located in the fuel tank. You have to drop the tank to change the filter.
The fuel filter on a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox is a non-serviceable type, located inside the gas tank. It is not necessary to change the fuel filter on a periodic basis. The fuel filter is inside the fuel tank, as is the fuse for it. You can't get there without the right equipment so when it goes out like mine did you pray you are under warranty.

Depending on the year, make, and model, it will be located in several various places, but it will always be a canister type filter of various size and attachment options. It will usually have the words "fuel filter" printed on it. The fuel filter may be in plain sight, or it can also be hidden away in some random compartment.
There should be a door like that unscrews which is hiding the fuel filter. It should be labeled but it blends in with the color of the door which is usually gray like the rest of the underbody where it should be located

The fuel filter is located on the fuel line just in front of the passenger side rear tire. You will probably have to jack the car up to find it. The filter itself looks kind of like a tin can. Good Luck!
It looks like what a fuel filter should be
I have the Haynes 1999-2006 manual and from that I read "2005 and later models are equipped with a non-replaceable fuel filter built into the fuel sender assembly". I was wondering if I could change the fuel filter, but looks like you can't with this model and year.
From the look of things theis car does not have a fuel filter. The only filter that has to do with the fuel seems to be in the fuel tank. A 2001 Mazda Protege (actually, all models from 1999-2003 including the DX, LX, ES, Mazdaspeed, and Protege 5) does not have an inline fuel filter. The only fuel filter it has is a "strainer" or a "screen", which looks like a nylon mesh "sock". This strainer is connected to the fuel pump, located in the gas tank. Although this fuel strainer does not require periodic replacement, it is recommended that it be changed if you are replacing the fuel pump.
Fuel filter is located under the car, under the passenger side door. Depressurize the fuel system first using the relief valve on the fuel injectors; it has a screw on cap and works like a tire valve. Catch the gas in a rag. The fuel lines unsnap from the filter when you press in the tabs and pull. Keep your face away, or you'll get a face full of gas like I did.
If you will just go buy the fuel filter you will know what it looks like. The filter will be located somewhere between the fuel tank and the engine. If you crawl under the car and look you will find it. Owner's manual may also list the location.
