Underneath the truck, under the drivers seat, tucked into the frame. Just locate the gas tank, follow the fuel line from the tank going towards the engine, and you'll see it. Don't ask me how to take it off though; my manual says it's 1 of 2 designs, and it's actually a 3rd! I have recently found out that on a 1998 Ford Ranger the fuel filter is located just under the driver's door on the frame of the truck. It is tucked on the inside of the frame, so you have to crawl under the truck to see it. Good Luck.
