If it's the stock L-motor, it would be a mechanical fuel pump located at the front passenger side of the head (all the 620 pickups were carburated with mechanical fuel pumps). Otherwise it was updated with an electrical pump and could be anywhere between the engine and the fuel tank. Most likely it would have been mounted on the frame close to the fuel tank.
In the early months of 1972, the Datsun 620, also know as the Yue Loong 753, was released and became popular in Japan, Production of the Datsun 620 ended in 1979.

I removed all te disc brake system from a 78 or 79 Datsun PL 620. Willl it bolt up on a 77 PL 620?
The possible reasons why your 1979 620 Datsun may backfire pass 4000 RPM's may be because because either, you need to replace the fuel filter, clean the fuel injectors, run supreme gas( due to age of the car), replace spark plugs, ignition coil may be disconnected, ignition rotor may be scarred (about a $5.00 part)and need to be replaced, replace pcv valve ,replace air filter or timing may be off.
