I am having a similar issue with same make and model with 318 motor in it. With my truck there is a Auto shut-off relay located on the drivers side wall. This relay turns on for 2 seconds when engine is turned over my understanding is if it does not receive a signal from the distributor pickup plate which is the black apparatus under the cap it shuts off. It channels this signal through the brain. I just learned this bit of info and will see if it will fix my same problem. For now I have jumped this relay running a switch into the cab. Good luck
