Most of the fuel temp sensors are part of the fuel tank module and notserviceableseparately. Some areserviceable if you can find just the sensorsomewhereand wire it in. I am having the same problem. My vehicle is a later model but that is the problem. The module is way expensive and I'm looking for a cheap fix too.
The automatic transmission temperature sensor, on your 1990 Mitsubishi, is located on the top of the transmission. The sensor will have to electrical wires going to it.

If you remove your MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor, you will see there is a resistor just behind the MAF sensor on top...thats your Air Temperature Sensor.

There are two MAP Sensors on the Mitsubishi Montero Limited. They are both located on the left side of the engine about six inches apart. Look for a plug with a wire attached that resembles a spark plug wire boot.

The 2004 Mitsubishi Evolution fuel temperature sensor can be found on the top of the gas tank. The fuel temperature sensor will be near the front of the gas tank.
