My 1969 Chevy pickup has it in the fuel tank behind the seat
The gauge is part of the fuel pump/float assembly within the gas tank. It is probably a $500.00 repair. It is harmless.
The gas gauge sending unit is part of the fuel pump assembly - inside - the gas tank.See "Related Questions" below for more
your gas gauge float is in the gas tank you have to drop your gas tank and take out sending unit but if the gas gauge is not reading right you should check the ground wire on the gas tank
Your float assembly is probably sticks within the tank. It would be expensive to repair because the gas tank would need removal and the fuel pump/ float assembly is a unit. Sorry.
Usually the sending unit (float assembly) in the tank has failed.Usually the sending unit (float assembly) in the tank has failed.
It sounds to me like your gas float in the tank has a crack in it and gas has leaked into the float, I had a problem with the same year and on mine the float was full and the gage always showed empty. I removed the assembly and manually moved the float so it should show a half tank and it did, moved it to full and it sowed full. Then I uncliped the float from the assembly and shook it and it was full of gas. If I remember right the float from a ford dealer was under ten dollars. I've got a 1989 e350 winnebago. Mine showed empty all the time. The float was full of gas. Mine would also "run out" of gas with about 15 gallons left. Turns out the in tank fuel pump on the assembly was also shot. Found a complete replacement assembly for about a hundred bucks. If yours is a 460 engine with a 36-40 tank, the number to search for is E2071S.
It's likely the float sensor in the gas tank is malfunctioning. It might be part of the fuel pump assembly.
It is probably a bad float and you will have to replace the sending unit assembly.
it is a float in the gas tank that tells the fuel gauge where to be
It is attached to the fuel pump inside the gas tank, so you will need to remove the entire assembly. More than likely, the float has become waterlogged with gas and will need to be replaced.
sticking float on the fuel pump, or malfunction in the float
The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. You have to remove the fuel tank from the vehicle. The fuel pump is attached to the fuel gauge float assembly. I am not certain on that particular year but some of the fuel pumps themselves can be removed and replaced and on others you have to replace the entire float/pump assembly.
