What is a Generic Electronic Module?
The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is found on Ford vehicles and is basically a Body Control Computer. It controls many of the following functions on most Ford vehicles:
The GEM is bolted to the back of the fuse box.
Sometimes though the fuse box gets water in it and causes the same problems too.
On the 1995 model, the GEM is located above and to the right of the gas pedal, directly to the left of the coffee holder (kind of under the dash).
It is a black rectangular box approximately 6" x 4".
There is a single bolt in the upper left corner (when kneeling at the driver-side door) that is hard to see. Remove this bolt and slide the box to the left to remove it from a couple of clips on the back that you cannot see (these clips are on the right side of the module to hold it in place).
There are 2 cable harnesses attached to it at the top.
The GEM in a ford windstar is located up inside the dash, above and to the left of the gas pedal. it's held in with a single bolt.
The Gem Module is a relay that control the majority of the electrical functions in late model ford vehicles
where is the gem module located on a 2002 ford f 250
The gem module on an 03 Ford Explorer is under the dash. It is just to the left of the radio.

I believe the GEM is in the center stack of the dash and that the radio has to be removed to gain access
You can find the module for your 2000 Ford Explorer on the firewall in the engine compartment. The module will be on the drivers side of the firewall.
I'm not sure if your Ranger is the same , but on my 1995 Explorer with a similar dash the GEM is in the center stack of the dash , to the left of the radio On a 1997 Ford Ranget 4x4 the Gem module is located as stated above. Behind the radio and to the left.
