Don't know if this will apply to your car but I have a similar problem with my XF Falcon ute. When I turn the fan to LOW/1 a burning smell and shortly after, smoke fills the cabin. It seems there is a quantity of dried leaves in the vicinity of the fan rheostat which causes them to smoulder when they get hot . Very hard to get them all out of the ductwork without removing the dash, I've been told.
