Is it serious if my car idler is making a noise?
check your idler pulley and tesioner pulley
Lots of noise or the belt jumping off.
No. The idler pulley only maintains tension on the serpentine belt. A faulty idler pulley can cause noise and a loose tensioner arm can cause belt slipping but other than having a similar name, it has nothing in common with engine idling.
I had a similar noise and had the idler pulley replaced. Noise still there and mechanic said it was probably the bearings in the pump, probably from overtightening the belt.
It may be the Idler pulley. I used to have a 96 Breeze with a 2.0L 4cyl that made a whining noise. I thought something might be seriously wrong, but then i discovered it was just the Idler pulley making noise. I changed it-- no more noise.
replace the belt with a goodyear bet
Don't just replace parts until the problem goes away! Remove the serpentine belt and check the individual pulley's and idler wheels. Often an idler pulley will make noise after it has been disturbed. This has nothing to do with the method of installation, it just means that the pulley was old and ready to give you problems anyway. With the belt off, check each individual component by turning it manually. Give each a spin to see if they make any noises that sound remotely like what you have been hearing. GM idler and tensioner pulley
Facing the engine the tensioner will be on left side of engine. There is an idler pulley that looks like the tensioner. The idler will have a smooth surface but the tensioner will have grooves on the pulley & should below the idler. If the tensioner is making noise etc it is prob just the tensioner pulley (grooved one) & you can get just the pulley. Big savings.
i had the same problem with my 02 intrepid it was the idler pulley to the ac belt $19 to fix it.
I don't believe there is an idler pulley on that model, just a tensioner pulley
If it is not your belt, check your pulleys and tensioner. It also depends on what type of vehicle you have. Sometimes the idler pulley will screech. Hope this helps.
An accessory drive belt idler pulley bearing going bad.
