Auusts John's last painting was a huge mural titled "Les Saintes-Maries and Sara l'Egyptienne". It consumed him from 1948 until his death in 1961. He painted and repainted, filling all the walls of his studio but could never satisfy his desire to create an imaginary world of gypsies, lightly clad women with naked children, musicians with flutes and lutes all in a mysterious setting somewhere between Wales and Shangri-la. He was still dabbing at it three weeks before his death in 1961. But after his death vandals broke into his studio and destroyed it, splashing paint everywhere. Perhaps it was best that John's final failure was thus hidden from the critical world.
