Dublin has 2 main cathedrals, St. Patrick's and Christ Church. Both are Protestant. Dublin actually does not have a Catholic Cathedral. It has what is known as the pro-Cathedral, which is Catholic, but it is not a full cathedral. St. Patrick's, which is the national cathedral, and Christchurch, which is the city cathedral, are close to each other. Their addresses are:
Christ Church Cathedral, Christchurch Place, Dublin 8.
Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Saint Patrick's Close, Dublin 8, Ireland.
The Pro-Cathedral is on Marlborough Street, Dublin 1.
The pro-Cathedral is known as St. Mary's pro-Cathedral. It is on Marlborough Street, near O'Connell Street, which is Dublin's main street. Although it has similar columns on the front of it, it is not the GPO (General Post Office) which is on O'Connell Street. The pro-Cathedral is Catholic, but it is not a full Cathedral. Dublin has two Cathedrals: St. Patrick's Cathedral and Christchurch Cathedral, both of which are Church of Ireland, which is Protestant. St. Patrick's is the national Cathedral and Christchurch is the city Cathedral. Both pre-date the reformation, but became Protestant under Henry VIII in the 1530s and have remained so ever since. As Christchurch retains the status of the city Cathedral, then the pro-Cathedral is not a full cathedral, hence the name. It is not very large and not even the largest Catholic church in the diocese of Dublin. Many other catholic churches in Dublin are bigger. Below you will find photos of the pro-Catherdral, Christchurch Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral and also the GPO.
Saint Patrick's Cathedral is a Protestant cathedral. Protestants generally only recognise two sacraments, which are Baptism and Communion. They are available there. IJust in case you are thinking in terms of Catholic sacraments, there is actually no Catholic Cathedral in Dublin. The only other cathedral in Dublin is Christ Church Cathedral, which is also Protestant. There are of course lots of churches in Dublin where the seven Catholic sacraments are available.
Strange as it may seem for the capital city of a Catholic country, there is actually no Catholic cathedral in Dublin. Dublin has two cathedrals, both of which are Protestant. St. Patrick's Cathedral is the national cathedral and Christchurch Cathedral is the city cathedral. When Henry VIII brought his form of protestantism to Ireland the status of the cathedrals changed. Since then the city cathedral has not been taken back into Catholic ownership. What Dublin does have is St. Mary's pro-Cathedral, which is Catholic. It holds the title "pro-Cathedral", signifying it does not have full cathedral status for the city, as that still resides with Christchurch Cathedral.
The earliest manuscript dates Christ Church cathedral to its present location in Dublin around 1030AD. Dúnán, the first bishop of Dublin and Sitriuc, Norse king of Dublin, founded the original Viking church.
