Does it have an ignition control module? That may be the cause. Or possibly a MAP sensor or a Crank position sensor or Cam position sensor. Check those first.

Had the same problem with my 96 Geo Metro........ I replaced the catalytic converter....... Real easy car to work on. Part was about $100 from www.rockauto.com heat up the bolts with some map gas and the bolts will come off
