The oil pan is slightly offset from the center of the vehicle toward the passenger's side, just about in line with the front wheel (the half shaft runs just forward of the pan). You can verify that it is the oil pan because the crankshaft pulley is in line with the front of the pan.

The oil filter is located just in front of the oil pan and is accessible from beneath the passenger's side of the vehicle in front of the tire.

The oil drain plug is a 16mm bolt on the rear of the oil pan.

Both the drain and filter are so easy to reach that if you were particularly ambitious (and had a long enough arm) you could change the oil without raising the car.

Note: This answer applies to a 2005 Freestyle Limited with AWD. I have not verified the location of these components on other model years or drive arrangements, however I expect that since the engine is the same through 2007, the oil pan and filter arrangement will be the same through those years.
