The oil filter is located under the belt tensioner on the front passinger side of the motor. There is even a little drip tray on the crossmember for oil spilled while removing the filter. This is the way it is on my 2005 GMC Canyon 4x4 3.5 5 cylinder automatic trans.

I have a Chevy 2004 Colorado V3500 5 cylinder engine. Filter is on the passenger side at the front of the engine. Easy to get too.
