Aircooled VW engines usually don't come with oil filters, as we know them. They are equipted only with oil strainers, which are just recycled/ cleaned until they need replacement. The oil strainers are just like, well strainers, made of aluminum screens that resemble the kind used for our homes to keep off the mosquitoes. By the way, the strainer is inside the round (disc) plate held by 6 nuts, just under the engine block where you drain the oil. Some of them don't have drain plugs so you have to loosen all the 6 nuts to drain the oil. Messy job!
Call a locksmith he can make you one on the spot.
There isn't an external oil filter on a STOCK Beetle. There is a screen that is suggested to be cleaned/replaced. There is a plate that the drain plug is screwed into that has 8 or so small bolts that holds it in. Just order a "Beetle Oil filter Kit" and it will have it all included. If you have an aftermarket external filter then it will usually take a Pennzoil PZ1 or a Fram PH8A filter.
A 1974 Volkswagen Beetle takes 2. 5 liters of oil. The weight of the oil should be 15W30. When the oil is changed, the oil filter should also be changed.
Most of the parts for old classic Beetles are still easy to find and relatively inexpensive.

if one was put on the car it should be in-line. you should find it in the hose leading to the carb just before the hose goes in to the carb. if you don't see one there you should put one there.
