Ignore that rubbish I just put about 'the back of the sump', I read the Q wrong: thought it was the sump plug the Q was on about. The gearbox fill plug is towards the front of the car, on the same side/face of the gearbox (N/S) as the drain plug but about 50 - 70mm higher up. Both have a square hole for removal tool. My drain plug was very tight so, be sure to use the correct fitting tool made of good quality steel. It will help if you dig accumulated dirt out of the square holes in each of the sump plugs with a small screwdriver so as to get the maximum depth and 'purchase with the removal tool. You will find that they will be caked up a bit. I found filling the gearbox easier from within the NS wheel arch (wheel off and small plastic wheel arch panel removed). It was easier to 'jockey' the bottles of replacement gear oil and their protruding plastic filler tubes in via this route. DOOOOO cover the brake disc up and/or check after filling the gearbox that you have not dribble any oil onto the disc or pads!!!
