Ann Arbor Michigan has a very interesting first step experiment going on in connection with Univ. of Michigan... there is a "net" of vehicles, operating on local streets, that all communicate to each other. With a goal to reduce accidents by vehicles warning of problems without interaction of the drivers. See the link below.
