The fish species of Malawi Cichlids can be found in Lake Malawi on the African continent. It is a large lake that contains many different environments and spans over three countries: Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique.

There are two distinct species both of which are called Zebra Cichlids. One species is from Malawi in Africa and a type of Pseudotropus that comes in many different colours, and the other is from Tropical South America and is a member of the Cichlasoma family. These two different species can not be interbred.
African cichlids come from Lake Victoria, Lake Tanyangyika, and Lake Malawi.
African Cichlids are from the Great Rift Lakes of East Africa. Mainly Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika.

I had peacocks with my yellow lab mbuna and white top hera mbuna cichlid. they will tussle with each other periodically, but it should be fine so long as you have than 4 or 5 to help spread aggression.
African cichlids are PH 8.2 while babrbs are lower. You could acclimate the barb up or the Malawi down in PH but neither would do as well. Also, African cichlids are very aggressive and the barb, who is semi-aggressive, would probably not survive for long.

Cichlids are species of aquatic fish that are found diversely, in regards to various sizes and shapes. Generally they are ovate in shape and laterally slightly compressed commonly medium sized. Scientist have been able to describe at least 1650 species of Cichlids and yet to discover more making it one of the largest families in animal kingdom. They are kept in home aquariums as well.
I don't know of any algae eating 'sucking catfish' that can be mixed with African Cichlids but some of the Malawi species of cichlid are Algae eaters I believe. As far as the other cichlids from the Americas and the Amazon goes, Plecostomus sp. can usually fit in with them OK. provided you make sure they all are of a similar size.
Oscars are cichlids! They are from the South American group of cichlids. Fish can mate only within the same species. Oscars can only mate with other Oscars.
