Pictures of the Star of David are found in ancient amulets (such as Raziel) and it may be a Kabbalistic (mystical) representation of God's presence, with the six points of the star hinting to the four directions plus up and down. One of the titles of God is Magen David (Shield of David), and is found in the blessings recited after the Haftarah in synagogue.
The synagogue
It is actually called a Shield of David, and the only type of worship place you would expect see it is a synagogue, though some Christian churches have also adopted the symbol.
