a 1992 Volvo 940 doesn't have a speedometer cable. the speedometer is controlled electronically.
It is quite easy to install the 1992 Chevy Lumina brake light switch. The brake light switch simply plugs in and out.
It will be mounted to a pressure port on the service (foot) brake valve

The switch is on the shift knob. There is also a relay and solenoid. Change out the flasher relay located under the dash. Not the brake light switch which is activated by the brake pedal. Replacing the relay should solve the problem.
The Chevy lumina does not have an inertia switch.
Try replacing the back-up light switch (located on the left side of the transmission). It is a common problem.
