For all of the 1993-1996 Lincoln's with the 4.6L V8, there are 2 temperature sending units - with one being just to the left of the alternator and one being just to the right of the alternator. If you open the hood and looked at the alternator as being right in front of you, at the top of the engine, between the two banks of cylinders, you will see a water crossover tube (usually black) that pretty much sits right above and in front of the alternator. The crossover tube has a round cap/opening that takes a 1/4 drive socket to open it - this is where you fill your car's cooling system. Follow that black tube down to the left where it goes into the engine block and you will see a sensor sticking right out in front of you with 2 wires that are attached to the wiring near the coils on the left. The 2 wire temp sensor on the left is the "Engine Coolant Temperature" sensor and it used by the EEC-IV computer to adjust the engine's running characteristics. Follow the black tube down to the right side where it also goes into the engine, and you will see the sensor with ONE wire on it sticking out at you from the black pipe. This is the dashboard guage/trip computer sending unit and it controls the temp guage on the dash.
The last two times that I had to replace one of the sensors, I wound up replacing both so that i knew they were both good and reading similarly. Once a car overheats a few times, it seems like one or both of the sensors goes "numb" and doesn't have the wide range of electrical change anymore.
In both cases, changing them is a snap. I've found that if you put something to loosen bolts (3-in-one oil, penetrating oil) on the threads near the pipe, drive the car for a bit to warm it up, come back and then let it cool down some, the sensors will come out easily.
