Code 44 in any GM automobile including the 1987 Buick, means that the oxygen sensor is faulty. The oxygen sensor regulates how much air goes into the motor for combustion to occur.

If you have a digital display on your skylark, therer is a button on the top right side of the diaplay. The button is used to change from volts, oil press, rpm, and temp, depending on which you want to see.
The temperature sensor on a 1987 Nissan Stanza is located on the rear of the radiator. It is about one-third of the way down from the top.

The sensor is on the back side of engine at the lip of the oil pan put installed in the engine block.
It could be a vacuum leak. Check all those air hoses in there. It's a good idea to replace them every few years or so.
