When your looking at the engine it will be on the right hand side of the engine block. you will see a big black hose running in to it. if i remember correctly it is held on by two bolts. hope this helps you out.

The cooling system diagram for a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire can be found in its manuals. It can also be obtained as a print out at an auto part store.
if you look under the exhaust manifold there is a metal pipe that runs between the oil pan and the frame. the metal hose connects to the thermostat housing under the manifold. you must remove the exhaust manifold heat shield on the top of manifold to get to the 2 8mm bolts to remove the thermostat. make sure you take note of the direction of flow from the old thermostat.
the sparks plugs are under the cover on top of the engine

it should be up near your raditator. your local auto zone can tell you where it is. should be easy from there. just pop ouot the old and in with the new.
