Follow the upper radiator hose the the engine. The thermostat is located under the housing at the end of the hose.

If it is a Pontiac 350, any hei distributor out of any size Pontiac motor up to 1979 will work.

Whether with the Chevy 350 or no, the thermostat is at the other end of the large hose that enters the radiator from the top; in the top of the engine block. Just follow the hose from the radiator to the thermostat housing.
It might be a wire going to the thermostat housing, or possibly it connects to a sensor screwed into the intake manifold near the thermostat hosusing.
