1. You have to take either an air tiara or an air talisman with you, to be able to enter the air altar. At first, a talisman may be better, since it has the option to show you the way, but eventually, a tiara is better, since you can wear it and save one inventory space.
2. Recommended: Items to teleport near Varrock bank - either a Varrock teleport tab (members only), or the corresponding runes. This will save you some time.
3. Fill the remaining inventory with rune essence. These may not be noted. You can mine them yourself, or buy them from the Grand Exchange.
4. Go to the air altar. Go from Varrock west, towards the Barbarian Village. The entrance to the air altar is a bit south of the path, before crossing the river.
If you have the tiara on your head, just click on the "mysterious stones". If you have the talisman, use it on the "mysterious stones". This will teleport you somewhere else. Click on the altar to make the air runes.
If you are just starting with Runecrafting, this will cost you money (at higher levels, you can actually make money from Runecrafting). You may want to go to the Runespan instead, to earn experience in Runecrafting for free.
