The timer plate is accessed under the three inch diameter plate on the lower right side of engine that has the old AMF "1" on it. You must remove the upper and lower rivets by drilling out the heads, then gently pry off that plate. directly underneath is another plate secured by a left and right screw. Remove screws, plate and gasket. Now you are looking at the timing cavity with timing markings, screwdriver slot for moving the timing plate and electronics. 1983s are electronically timed, so there are no points in there, but the plate that you see deep inside is the timer plate. The two "bosses" that held the second cover plate with screws are actually slotted screws themselves to loosen the timer plate to adjust the timing. Mark the inside housing before you loosen the timer plate screws, so that if you mess up, at least you know where you started.
