After running my regular key through the wash, I have been using the "valet" key. Other than the fact that I must manually unlock the doors, it seems to work well. I drive an ML320. Besides, the valet key fits better on my key ring.

Do you have the "valet key" (black FOB key with the auto-lock & 'panic' buttons are)? We had this problem with our '98 E320 and it turned out the battery in the valet key needed replacing.
You can't. The valet key doesn't have the capacity to do more than it does and you can't add capacity to it unless you have the standard key and even then it would take skills beyond most people's ability.
No you cannot. that key is only used to unlock the door or trunk from the outside, or lock the glove box.
Your owners manual should show you the process. There is a little tab near where the key pops out that must be depressed to slide the unit out of its cover.
