Do you have the "valet key" (black FOB key with the auto-lock & 'panic' buttons are)? We had this problem with our '98 E320 and it turned out the battery in the valet key needed replacing.
try turning the steering wheel to the left or right and holding it there while turning the key
TRY TURNING THE KEY OVER.
The key and the ignition lock are badly worn. Try a different key if it doesn't fix it you need to replace the ignition lock.

Umm...you might want to try turning the key counter-clockwise (toward you) while the car is in park. Then pull the key out of the ignition. This is the basic method of turning all vehicles off.
