I wish I knew the answer to this as well as I have the same gun. The only thing I can offer is that it should be noted that it has an octagonal barrel and a falling block/breech, and most importantly the patent date is April 17, 1894 NOT April 1794. J Stevens A & T was only in business between about 1886 and 1914 approx. this is wreckmaster96739, i have in my possesion a j Stevens a and t co. u s patent apr. 1794,it's a 22 long rifle ser. # 40279. it was my grandfather's grandfarther's gun. I'm courious what the value is.

If it is a U.S. patent, you can go to the USPTO website for patent searches and enter the number in "patent number search".
Patent pending is a warning that a patent application has been filed. It is completely worthless until and unless a patent is actually issued for that invention. Patent number notice means a patent with that number was issued for the invention that is implemented in the product labeled with that number.

Valient was a trade name used by the Spear and Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on firearms they retailed. The patent date identifies yours as a product of J. Stevens Arms.
The '1864' marking you are seeing is part of a patent date, not a model number. Stevens guns generally will have the 1864 patent date through about 1916, and there were a great many models produced on the same basic action that would show that patent date. If you can send us detailed digital pictures, we can help you identify which model you have and go from there. sales@countrygunsmith.net
