As with all valve gaskets it is located between the valve cover and the head. To get to it you undo all bolts holding the valve cover on and then pull valve cover off. you will find it on the valve cover/ head contact point.
Begin by removing the cylinder head from your Chevrolet S 10 four-cylinder engine. Remove the head gasket and clean the surface. Put the new head gasket on and return the cylinder head to its original position.
The intake gasket(manifold) will not match the 96 engine. I believe the 97 engine was the last year for the older style.

The head gasket is the gasket that fits between the cylinder head and the engine block.
Yes , engine coolant can get in an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket , a warped or cracked cylinder head , a bad intake manifold gasket etc. ( P.S. I'm not a mechanic / technician )
The engine will run hot. This could lead to a blown head gasket. It may even build pressure and cause damage to the radiator and or hoses.
follow the top radiator hose to engine . remove three bolts from housing change thermostat and gasket ,put bolts back in follow the top radiator hose to engine . remove three bolts from housing change thermostat and gasket ,put bolts back in
A head gasket joins that cylinder head with the cylinder block. It separated the oil and the coolant passages. If the two mix, the head gasket will "blow" soon.
The head gasket is used to seal between the engine cylinder head and the engine block
