According to the parts man at Yamaha who I talked with today, the number is on the frame on the left side by the footpegs. This was for a Warrior 350, but may work for your model too. For my Yamaha Moto-4 350 - the VIN is located on the frame, adjacent to the (rear side) of the left front tire.
To my understanding Yamaha has always done the 10th digit as the year. So yours would be a 2002 year model. Some years it was a letter like "S" for 96' and "T" for 97' up until the year 2000.
10th number in the vin should be the last number for the year
