It is bolted in the drivers side of the transmission tail shaft. It is round and is held in place with 1 10mm bolt. If it is a 4-wheel drive then it will be in the transfur case tail shaft housing.

The 89 model does not have a VSS.

raise the vehicle,disconnect the electrcal connection from the vss. remove the mounting bolt and withdraw the vss from the transaxle case. replace sensor "O" ring.
The VSS is for 1997 and older Rangers. 1998 and newer Rangers are not equipped with a VSS type system. The vehicle speed information comes from the antilock brake system rear wheel speed sensor according to the Haynes repair manual.
Check the #6 fuse. If it is good then the VSS needs replacing.
