The VSS is for 1997 and older Rangers. 1998 and newer Rangers are not equipped with a VSS type system. The vehicle speed information comes from the antilock brake system rear wheel speed sensor according to the Haynes repair manual.
I have a 99 ranger 4x4 you might be surprised that you dont have a vss ! Instead look on your rear axel . its your abs sensor, or also called, rear speed sensor!
The VSS vehicle speed sensor on top of the transmission is faulty.
The 2000 Ford Ranger typically has several sensors related to its transmission system. Key sensors include the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor, the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), and the range selector or neutral safety switch. Depending on the specific model and transmission type, there may be additional sensors, but the primary ones for monitoring transmission performance are usually around three to five.
I don't believe it has one , the Ford Explorers 1996 and newer models don't have a conventional speedometer cable , they have an electronic speedometer and a vehicle speed sensor ( VSS )

The VSS in a 2001 Ford Escape is located on the left rear side of the transmission. There is only about an inch of it that can be seen.
The vss is on top of the trans-axle, behind the engine on the passenger side.
It is located in the center of the differential (Rear end) of the truck. Just follow the wires down and you'll see it. One 10mm(I belive) bolt holds it in.
On a 1996 Ford Ranger, the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is typically located on the transmission, specifically on the tailshaft. It can usually be accessed from underneath the vehicle and is often mounted near the output shaft. If you're having trouble locating it, refer to the vehicle's service manual for detailed diagrams and instructions.
on the top of the differential
Replace the VSS and wires.
Screwed into the rear of the transmission housing.
