It's always in the neck. But use a smaller needle for calves than you would for cows (preferably 1" 18 g needle instead of a 1.5" or 2" 16 g needle)
A calf with only four teeth is a newborn calf, or one that is just a day or two old.
Ventogluteal
A 3 day old calf should be nursed 3-5 times a day depending on its size and strength.
It is highly recommended to get in contact with a veterinarian about this immediately otherwise you may soon have a dead calf on your hands.
A calf can be sold when he is only a day or two old. But this is highly unrecommended, because of the high stress these baby calves go through, which can lead to sickness, injury and even death. A calf that has been weaned off the bottle at 3 months of age has a better chance of surviving his ordeal at the stockyards than a two day-old calf. Six month old calves that have been weaned off their mothers have an even better chance than 3-month old or two-day old calves do. So it all depends on when you want to sell, if you have the heart to let them go.
depends... did you feed it during that first week?
A calf's tail will never touch the ground unless it's laying down, like right after birth, or once every day in the straw, or if it's dead.
Depends on the breed and body condition of the calf. A 600 lb Jersey calf can be around 7 to 8 months old, whereas a 600 lb miniature calf may not be a calf at all, but a 15 month old heifer or bull. A soggy Angus calf at 600 lbs may be at around 5 to 6 months of age.
A newborn whale is called a calf. It will be called a calf until it is old enough to leave its mother.
First restrain the momma cow in a headgate or squeeze. Then get the calf up to it's momma's udder, and try to squirt some milk on its nose and mouth. Open the calf's mouth and insert the teat and help the calf to suck by squirting milk into the calf's mouth. You may have to keep doing this for a while until the calf gets it and starts suckling on its own. If the calf is too weak to suckle, you will have to milk out the cow and tube-feed the calf.
The most accurate way to tell the age of your calf is by looking at his front teeth. A newborn calf will have no teeth; a week old calf will only have maybe one or two teeth that have popped up already; a 1 month old calf will have all 8 lower incisors already.
Cereal grain is the best to feed a calf. This includes corn, oats, barley and rye.
