THE BLOCK CASTING NUMBER IS BEHIND THE CYL. HEAD. SORRY CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH HEAD. IT USUALLY IS A RAISED SEVEN DIGIT NUMBER. THE CYL. HEAD CASTING NUMBER REQUIRES REMOVING THE VALVE COVER AND CHECKING THE RAISED CASTING NUMBER ON TOP OF THE HEAD. YOU CAN CALL A DEALER OR A ENGINE REBUILDING SHOP AND GIVE THEM THE NUMBERS. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU THE YEARS THAT CORRESPON TO THE CASTING NUMBERS.

That is the number of the block. It was used to build 302, 327, and 350 engines in 2 or 4 bolt main from 1969-1980. There is a machined pad on the passenger side of the block just in front of the cylinder head that should have a combination of letters and numbers that can provide information about the horsepower and application. AnswerThe casting number will not tell you the casting date. You need to find the casting date information from another area of the block. Since there are multiple locations and multiple ways this information can be stamped on the block you should review the site http://www.mortec.com for a detailed list of locations and examples of what you are looking for. The site will also help you decode all the information. My 1981 350 sbc casting date and where it was made is on the front of the passenger side head just below the alternator. Write those numbers down and go to MSA-1.com for your answer.
