Those Maya that lived and farmed in the highlands of Guatemala and Southern Mexico were well-off, but probably not wealthy. Things have not changed that much in the last 500-800 years. The occasional earthquake or disease that struck brought (and continues to bring) poverty, but most Maya peoples continue to be well-off, but not wealthy. those that have left their ancestral gods for the God of The Bible are happier, but again, are not necessarily either wealthy or poor, but well off, as were their ancesters.
