I believe the first slaves were prisoners of war in the days of ancient Egypt. If you are speaking of slaves here in America the first black slaves came from Africa and the first white slaves came from Ireland. The Irish slaves were able to escape either by working to pay their way out (indentured servants) or by actually escaping. Because most of them were in the cities of the north escape was not that difficult. The black slaves down south were kept under much closer guard, sometimes chained at night and so on so escape for them was almost impossible. Some did manage and became cowboys out west or worked to help others escape. That was a very dark period in American History. We should never forget lest we repeat that kind of history but, Some people for their own personal gain continue, on both sides, to keep the wounds open and I'm not at all sure that helps anybody.
