If you are planning on attending college and need financial aid assistance, then one of the types of funding you should consider is a government grant. There are primarily two different types of government grants available to students federal and state grants.

Federal Government Grants

Once you have completed the annual financial aid application, you may find that your school automatically submits your application for any federal college grants that may be available to you. This will work to your advantage in making available any funds that do not require you to pay them back once you have graduated or stopped attending college.

The most common federal government financial aid grant is the Pell Grant. This grant is geared toward lower-income students who demonstrate financial need to attend college. It is not based on academic achievement and many students find that a Pell Grant gives them a jump start to beginning their college career.

Another popular federal government grant is the Academic Competitiveness (AC) Grant. This is a federal grant that is available to college freshman and sophomores who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement. Students who demonstrate strong leadership abilities and participate in community service also qualify for the AC Grant. The AC Grant is also needs-based and students must meet the qualifications for a Pell Grant.

For upper division students studying math, engineering, computer science or other sciences, the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant is another government grant that can provide financial aid. This grant is specifically targeted toward students who are studying in science and math fields and who also qualify for a Pell Grant.

State Government Grants

Each state has their own government grant program that works in conjunction with federal college grant programs. Also, each state has their own government grant programs directed toward specific types of students and fields of study. For example, Michigan has a college grant program that is specifically for non-traditional students who are reentering college. Most states also have programs for low income students and students with high academic achievement. Many state government grants do not have high numbers of applicants and go unused. By conducting some research on your own, you may find that you are able to apply for and be offered a state government college grant that will provide significant assistance with your financial aid needs.

Try To Find Reoccurring Grants?

Most grants for college students run out after a single year. You might get three thousand dollars to pay for your first year at a school, making it affordable, but then you will get nothing after that. This causes many people to drop out because they cannot afford school any longer. If you want to save money each year, making sure that you do not have to drop out, you should look for reoccurring grants for college students. These grants will be renewed each year, so you will get the money over and over again as long as you are in school.
