In 1909, architects needed a plan to improve traffic flow in Chicago. They presented a proposal to the Commercial Club of Chicago. The major part of the proposal was a double-decked roadway along the river. Charles H. Wacker, chairman of the Chicago Plan Commission, pushed the idea.
You can buy replacement string for the wacker at any hardware store. There are different types you can get. First check the diameter of string that yours typically uses. Also, you can get string with or without sharp edges which should help the cutting capability of the wacker as well. First unplug the wacker as you'll be putting your hands near the head of the wacker and the last thing you want is for it to fire up while you're down there. Second, pull off the head by firmly gripping the part that you bump to feed more line. It should come off with just a little bit of strength. If it takes all of your strength, then you may have a different model where the head comes off differently. Once off, wind the new string onto the head. First, wind it on the direction of the arrows on the bottom of the string holder (head), typically this is counter clockwise. Make sure you wind it with the threads neatly parallel. Leave about 6" of string unwound as you'll feed that through the hole on the wacker. Replace the head and make sure some string is feeding out. You can test the feeding mechanism by pressing down on it and making sure a little bit comes out (1/2" or so).
