Major General George B. McClellan played only a limited role in his army's retreat as the Peninsula campaign was collapsing. At Glendale on June 30, 1862 he was aboard a gunboat on the James. He was only able to witness the Battle of Malvern Hill from a distance and directed none of it. He had already decided that he had to retreat back to Harrison's Landing, thus he failed to make good use of his army's victory at that battle.
