Washington merely sent in forces to protect Pennsylvania from foreign forces. While the French were technically allies of the colonials during the War of Independence, they still continued to trade with England. As a result, the colonials had to be extremely careful about who they traded and did business with.
George Washington was working for the British in 1753-54 traveling to northwestern Pennsylvania in an attempt to persuade the French to leave the area and their forts such as Fort LeBeouf (Waterford, PA), Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh, PA) and others. The French & Indian wars began.

George Washington built Fort Necessity in southwestern Pennsylvania in 1754. He was forced to surrender this fort to the French after a short battle known as the Battle of Fort Necessity during the French and Indian War. This was one of Washington's early military experiences.
