India was and still is in the geographical subcontinent of South Asia. Before the partition with Pakistan, it was bordered on the north by Afghanistan and Nepal, and on the East by what was then called Burma. Politically it was part of the British Empire (Commonwealth of Nations). India sent troops to fight in North Africa and Italy, but most were held back to defend India against invasion from Japan and to act as a staging area for operations in Burma and the immediate vicinity. Prior to the war, Ghandi and others had been working for independence from Great Britain, which eventually occurred after WWII ended.
