As a young man Jesus' occupation was that of carpenter. And at the age of thirty he began his career as God's chief minister on earth, preaching and performing miracles. After but three and a half years his activity was cut short by his being executed.
As Jesus was born in Judea with the primary mission to minister first to the House of Israel - with Judah being first - He predominantly taught and performed miracles in what is now the Land of Israel.

His mothers house was the place the disciples met after Jesus' resurrection. Some believe it was her house the last supper was eaten in with Jesus and his disciples. If this is so, Mark probably did know Jesus personally while he was on earth.
