In 1872, P. T. Barnum was a famous showman and was enjoying great success for his famous circus shows. He decided that year to introduce a new attraction from the US frontier, the Wild West. This show included a Native American village that could be found in the US's western areas. He included real Native Americans, their homes and even buffaloes.

In 1871 PT Barnum started the "Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Hippodrome". In 1881 James Bailey and Branum merged to become "Barnum and Bailey Circus". In 1919 that was merged with the "Ringling Brothers Circus". The film "The Greatest Show on Earth" which featured the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, was released in 1952.
The Ringling Brothers (there were 7 of them).
There were seven Ringling Brothers in all. The one who started the circus was John. His brothers were Albert, Otto, Alfred, Charles, August, and Henry. There were five. John, Albert, Otto, Charles and Alfred. The two other people who joined the act of the Ringling brothers were named Barnum and Bailey. From the web site of Ringling Brothers. There are 7 brothers.Following the death of P.T. Barnum in 1891, James A. Bailey carried the Barnum & Bailey Circus to new heights of popularity. The Greatest Show On Earth® rode the rails on 85 railroad cars, employed more than 1,000 people, and consisted of five rings and stages, plus the largest traveling menagerie anywhere! Meanwhile, as the 19th century was coming to a close, the Ringling brothers of Baraboo, Wisconsin, were building a reputation of their own. Beginning their tented circus in 1884, Alf T. Ringling, Al Ringling, Charles Ringling, John Ringling, and Otto Ringling soon became known as Kings Of The Circus World. A sixth brother, Henry Ringling, joined the show in 1886. By 1887, the Ringling brothers' show was growing. The official title was Ringling Bros. United Monster Shows, Great Double Circus, Royal European Menagerie, Museum, Caravan, and Congress of Trained Animals. In 1889 the seventh Ringling brother, A.G. "Gus" Ringling, joined the show, which now had a seating capacity of about 4,000 as it played cities and towns in Wisconsin and Illinois. Admission was 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. The year also marked a first for the Ringlings, as they took to the rails, becoming the 12th such circus to do so.

An Arkansas newspaper applied the phrase "the greatest show on earth" to describe Dan Rice's circus, which was active from the 1830's to the 1860's. That's half a century before Barnum & Bailey got started. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey currently use the phrase to describe their circus, but they did not originate it, nor was it initially applied to them.
It was an Arkansas newspaper that called Dan Rice's circus "the greatest show on earth" back in the 19th century. (Rice's circus was active between the 1830's and the 1860's.) Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey use the phrase today to describe their circus, which is currently the largest in America. Barnum's first show was back in 1871, well after Rice had packed it in.
In spite of the use of this slogan ("the greatest show on earth") by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, an Arkansas newspaper applied the phrase in describing Dan Rice's circus, which was active from the 1830's to the 1860's. That's about half a century before Barnum & Bailey came to be.
The "Greatest Show on Earth" is the "Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus", although I am not personally fond of capturing and training wild animals for human amusement. Ncis and law & order : svu

The film you mean is 'The Greatest Show on Earth' and Cornel Wilde played The Great Sebastian.
It was the famous Jumbo - he was born in 1861 in an area in today's Eritrea (not quite Ethiopia), which was a French colony at that time and brought to a Paris zoo. He was transferred to London Zoo in 1865 and was a world famous and incredibly popular attraction. He would daily take children for rides on his back around the zoo. He was sold again in 1882 to P.T.Barnum, the owner of "The Greatest Show on Earth" for the huge sum of $10,000. When Barnum offered to buy Jumbo, 100,000 school children wrote to Queen Victoria begging her not to let him be sold and leave British shores! But he left and went to New York were Barnum started his summer circus tour each year. I think this must be the elephant you are looking for!
